Kraków Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Stalls & What to Expect

Krakow’s Christmas market is consistently ranked among the best in Central Europe, and it is easy to see why. For three and a half weeks in December, the Rynek Glowny — the vast medieval market square at the heart of the Old Town — fills with wooden stalls, coloured lights, a large Christmas tree, and the smell of mulled wine and grilled oscypek (smoked sheep’s cheese). The atmosphere is warm and genuinely festive without being overwhelming, and the square’s Gothic and Renaissance architecture makes a striking backdrop after dark.

History and Character

The market has run continuously for over 25 years and draws both locals and international visitors. Unlike some Christmas markets that have become purely tourist-facing, Krakow’s edition keeps a strong local character: you will see Polish families, students from the Jagiellonian University, and pensioners sharing the same stalls. The market is organised by the city and stallholders must apply each year, which keeps quality relatively consistent.

What to Buy and Eat

Craft stalls sell wooden decorations, amber jewellery, hand-painted ceramics, wool scarves, and traditional nativity scenes (szopki krakowskie) — the elaborately decorated cribs unique to Krakow, recognised by UNESCO. Food stalls offer grilled kielbasa, zurek (sour rye soup served in a bread bowl), pierogi with various fillings, and obwarzanek (Krakow’s distinctive ring-shaped bread snack). Drinks include grzaniec (mulled wine) and krupnik (honey vodka served warm). Prices are generally reasonable — expect to pay 8-15 PLN for most food items.

Schedule and Carols

The market opens daily from approximately 10:00 to 21:00, with extended hours on weekends. A programme of outdoor carol concerts takes place on the square’s small stage most evenings, usually starting around 17:00. Exact times vary by day; the Krakow tourist board publishes the schedule on their website in November.

Getting There and Tips

The market is in the Old Town, accessible on foot from most central accommodation. Trams and buses stop at Basztowa, a short walk from the square. Arrive early in the evening (17:00-18:00) for the best atmosphere — the lights are on, the crowds are manageable, and the carol performances are typically underway.

Wear warm, waterproof layers: December temperatures in Krakow range from -3°C to 5°C, and evenings are colder. Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends. The market closes on 23 December, before Christmas Eve, so plan accordingly.
